Enugu State’s government officials, led by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, and the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Victor Udeh, paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Ogene musician, Okezie Mba, also known as Igbo-Jah, in Ogui Nike, Enugu, on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the musician was allegedly shot and killed by a Police Inspector (name withheld) on the premises of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, Enugu, after a visit to the station. As the musician was leaving, the Inspector allegedly opened fire, resulting in Mba’s death.
In his address to the family elders, Onyia conveyed the governor’s condolences and vowed that justice would be pursued. He stated, “Governor Peter Mbah has instructed us to come and share in your sorrow and to assure you that we will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served. Every life in Enugu is valued, and we cannot stand idly by in the face of such tragedy.”
Onyia further expressed appreciation to the family for welcoming the delegation amidst their grief, adding that “to the children, His Excellency extends his heartfelt sympathy. We are committed to seeking justice and will not allow this incident to go without consequence. Our deepest sympathies are with you, and we pray for strength and comfort in these trying times.”
Responding, Chief Joseph Mba, Igbo-Jah’s elder brother, thanked the state government for its swift response and commitment to justice. He also sought support for the welfare and education of the late musician’s children and family, including his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
In a related statement, the Enugu Police Command confirmed on Saturday the arrest of the inspector involved, pledging that “the officer will face the full extent of the law upon the completion of the investigation.”
