Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced the establishment of an investigative committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju.
Olanrewaju collapsed in the third round of his bout against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 29. Despite immediate transport to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of this incident, Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), has publicly accused the Ghana Boxing Authority of negligence, claiming that the fight occurred without adherence to essential boxing protocols.
During a recent interview with Sporty FM, a Ghanaian radio station, Adams made it clear that the government is fully committed to uncovering the underlying facts. He asserted that the investigation will be comprehensive and transparent.
“We must conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether all necessary fight protocols were followed and if the appropriate ringside procedures, including paramedic availability, were in place,” Adams stated firmly. “We are just beginning this process; we need to establish a committee to investigate what happened. I assure everyone that nothing will be hidden; we will ask all the critical questions.”
Adams also called on both the Nigerian and Ghanaian boxing authorities to fully cooperate once the investigative panel is officially formed.
Olanrewaju, a former West African and national light-heavyweight champion, had an impressive professional record of 24 fights, with 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws.
