Shettima orders a revamp of road safety protocols to minimize accidents.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s road safety measures to significantly reduce traffic accidents nationwide. He also announced plans to inaugurate the National Road Safety Advisory Council, tasked with cutting road accidents by 50% before 2030.
During a meeting with the leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Shettima emphasized the urgent need to address the rising number of road accidents, calling for a complete review of the country’s road safety system. He highlighted that non-compliance with traffic regulations was a major cause of the problem and urged the FRSC to address its internal challenges.
“We need a thorough solution to our road safety challenges. The entire system needs improvement,” Shettima said, referencing international examples like Dubai and the UK as models of effective road safety practices. He stressed the importance of leveraging technology and promoting discipline, such as using automated systems to penalize traffic violators by charging fines directly from their bank accounts, encouraging adherence to traffic laws.
Shettima also linked road safety with broader security concerns, noting that the FRSC’s role is intertwined with the Nigerian Police as part of the country’s security infrastructure. He praised the Enugu State government for its advanced security setup, which includes surveillance across the entire state.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, discussed the importance of the National Road Safety Advisory Council in the updated Nigeria Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, which aims to reduce traffic accidents by 50% by 2030. He outlined the council’s responsibilities, including setting national road safety targets and coordinating efforts across federal, state, and local governments.
The council will include six governors representing the country’s six geo-political zones, ministers, the National Security Adviser, and the President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON).
