The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, has voiced urgent concerns over Vice President Kashim Shettima’s safety due to issues with the current presidential aircraft. Lawan raised the alarm after Shettima’s official plane suffered windshield damage at JFK Airport in New York, forcing him to cancel his trip to Samoa.
Since taking office, Shettima has frequently represented Nigeria abroad at President Bola Tinubu’s direction. However, recent incidents involving the aircraft, including the recent mishap in the U.S., have sparked serious concerns about its reliability and potential risks to the Vice President’s safety.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that a foreign object struck Shettima’s plane, causing significant damage to the windshield and other parts. Lawan expressed gratitude for Shettima’s safety in this incident but urged the Nigerian government to seek a thorough investigation from the U.S. authorities.
“The Vice President’s life and that of his crew are at risk due to this ageing, faulty aircraft,” Lawan stated, calling on the Federal Government to prioritize acquiring a new aircraft for Shettima’s official travels to prevent further incidents.
