As Ondo State’s governorship election draws near, a coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) factions has declared its support for Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Benson Akingboye, choosing him over APC’s candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The coalition, led by groups like Ondo Patriots, Ondo APC Solidarity Group, Jagaban Coalition, and the APC Youth League, expressed dissatisfaction with the selection process that brought forth Aiyedatiwa, questioning his capacity to govern effectively. Comrade Dele Oyewo of Ondo Patriots voiced the coalition’s frustration, describing the process as “flawed” and undermining electoral fairness.
Oyewo emphasized Akingboye’s unique qualifications, citing his business acumen and “spiritual insights” as qualities that could steer Ondo toward a prosperous future. According to the coalition, Akingboye’s vision is crucial for revitalizing Ondo’s struggling industrial sector, specifically mentioning the potential to revive industries like Oluwa Glass in Okitipupa and the Olosunta Oil Palm Industry, both of which have faced setbacks under the current leadership.
Dismissing rumours of SDP defections to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “fabrications,” the coalition reaffirmed Akingboye’s commitment to Ondo’s progress. Having previously contributed over 24 years to the PDP before joining the APC, Akingboye remains steadfast in his dedication to the state’s development.
“With Benson Akingboye at the helm, Ondo has a chance for a transformative industrial future,” Oyewo stated, signalling a deepening divide within the APC that could influence Ondo’s political landscape as the election approaches.
