Nigerian Nobel laureate and literary icon Wole Soyinka has expressed that he is prepared for his eventual passing, reflecting on his life and legacy in a recent interview with CNN. At 90 years old, Soyinka shared his thoughts on aging, his artistic journey, and the future.
Soyinka revealed that he has made personal arrangements for his death but still plans to take a vacation before that time comes. Reflecting on his unique way of celebrating his birthdays, he explained that he enjoys retreating into nature, finding solace in solitude: “On my birthdays, I retreat into the forest. Solitude brings me great joy.” Despite turning 90, Soyinka admitted he does not feel his age and tends to take birthdays for granted.
His home in Abeokuta, filled with modern art and cultural artifacts, symbolizes Nigeria’s cultural richness and serves as a peaceful retreat. He also highlighted his environmental conservation efforts, calling his estate the “autonomous republic of Ijegba”, a reflection of his passion for nature and reforestation. Soyinka humorously noted that he has made plans for his eventual passing within his estate, acknowledging the inevitable future.
As for immediate plans, Soyinka humorously shared his intention to take a vacation and refrain from giving further interviews, adding a lighthearted close to his reflections.
