Lawmakers propose establishing Bola Tinubu University to promote the teaching of Nigerian languages.

The House of Representatives is reviewing a bill proposing the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other members, the bill aims to promote the study and preservation of Nigerian languages and culture.

The bill outlines that the university will offer academic and professional programs, including diplomas, first degrees, and postgraduate studies, with a focus on enhancing communication and developmental skills related to Nigerian languages. It also emphasizes the role of the university in fostering research, innovation, and collaboration with other institutions for the growth and conservation of Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources.

The institution is designed to produce professionals skilled in Nigerian languages and serve as a consultancy hub while engaging in community services and outreach programs. Additionally, the bill mandates regular visitations by the President, as the university’s Visitor, to ensure proper oversight, with provisions for removing council members in cases of misconduct.

The bill is expected to undergo a second reading soon, after which a public hearing will be held to gather stakeholders’ input.
