In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the EFCC Chairman urged lawyers to recognize the international conventions against money laundering. Olukoyede was quoted by the spokesman, Dele Oyewale, as having issued the warning during a panel discussion on money laundering at the 64th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference 2024 in Lagos. The EFCC boss urged legal practitioners to always observe due diligence in their practices. He said that this is necessary for them to know the background of their clients to avoid breaking AML/CTF regulations.

“We must protect the sanctity of our profession while simultaneously trying to comply with international laws and regulations,” he said.

He pleaded with them to recognize the global agreements prohibiting money laundering.

He contends that abiding by international norms is not always the path to morality.

“You will be taken off the grey list automatically if you follow the correct procedures.

“It is in your best interest to at least be aware of who your client is. It is required of you to receive payment from a reliable source.

“You will comprehend what I am saying if you have been a victim of crime. As attorneys, you are not allowed to disparage or disparage your dedication to your clients as a professional.
He declared, “Even a portion of the money laundering Act that we have examined doesn’t stop me from upholding the EFCC Act’s regulations and other financial laws in Nigeria.”

noting that although you are not entitled to your wage, the money that is given to you must not be the product of criminal activity,” he uttered.

In his remarks, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, attempted to elucidate the key issues brought up by Olukoyede during the meeting.

Additionally, Maikyau asked attorneys to consider Olukoyede’s charge with an open mind.

He went on to say that the NBA and the Commission ought to work together to combat corruption.

“Who else but us should lead the charge in the battle against corruption?” He stated.
