The Kano State Anti-Corruption and Public Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into an alleged ₦1.5 billion fraud linked to a foreign scholarship scheme. Two senior officials from the state’s Ministry of Higher Education are being questioned about discrepancies in the number of students supposedly studying abroad under the government’s initiative.

The scholarship program, aimed at supporting postgraduate students in India and Uganda, was introduced by Governor Abba Yusuf. Recently, Yusuf hosted a farewell dinner for 550 students set to benefit from the scheme, which was originally launched by former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

However, reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that only 418 students were actually sent abroad, sparking concerns about the remaining 583 students who were listed. The commission’s spokesperson, Kabiru A. Kabiru, confirmed the investigation and stated that the officials are being interrogated about the alleged fraud. The inquiry is ongoing, and Kabiru emphasized that those found guilty will be prosecuted, regardless of their position.

Preliminary findings suggest fraudulent activity within the Ministry of Higher Education regarding the scholarship allocations, and the commission is determined to uncover the truth and hold the perpetrators accountable.
